Duralex – what was your favourite number?

The Duralex brand

I recently read an article in The Guardian talking about the Duralex brand.

I hadn’t realised that there was a real tradition behind this glass, which became famous again when Osama Bin Laden was captured on film drinking tea from one.

The Duralex glass was always made with a number underneath. This number was used in school canteens, to determine the “oldest” child, but what number they had under their glass. The oldest child on the table, was then made responsible for pouring the water for the others. A lovely tradition. Does it still exist? Does anyone out there know?

Duralex have been through very rocky times, but now it seems that they are back on track with new investors. Their glasses have become very collectible on Ebay and they now appear in museums.
